Chapter 17

Zayne

He had felt Xenos.

He’d been right there!

Xenos was on the cusp of bringing him out of this void, and then it seemed as if he was ripped away from him. The despair that followed his friend’s forced departure was too much for Zayne to bear. The darkness had almost broken him down when he first found himself there. He had managed to keep his depression at bay. But now…

As he sank to the ground, his legs crossed beneath him and his head dropped into his hands. He began to sob silently, his body shaking violently with every wave of sorrow that hit him. He felt as if he were being crushed below the weight of the world as it sat firmly upon his shoulders.

Tears streamed down his face, dropping relentlessly onto his jeans. Zayne had never been much of a crier, and here he was bawling his eyes out like a two-year-old that had just had his favorite toy taken from him by an older child. The realization hit him like a ton of bricks, yet he could not gather the strength to stem the flow.

He wasn’t sure how long he sat there sobbing his heart out into his hands, but it seemed like hours had past. He was unable to get a good sense of time in this place. He was not even sure how long he had been there to start with. Was it hours? Days? Years? He shuddered as the thought brought on a feeling of dread. He began to tremble so hard he felt his bones rattling as his teeth chattered against the tremors. He hoped with everything in him that it hadn’t been years since he’d seen the light of day.

When his tears had finally run out, he slowly lifted his head and rubbed the remaining moisture from his cheeks before opening his eyes. Darkness is not what surrounded him as he stared around in shock. He even tried to blink a few times, thinking that maybe his mind or eyes were playing tricks on him.

Each time he blinked the scene around him came into clearer focus. He found himself sitting in a lush field with odd light aqua colored grass so tall that it blocked his vision of everything else beyond it, except for the strange indigo-colored sky above him.

It wasn’t as if he had never seen a sky that color, as that was the color the sky normally turned when night was setting in. No, what made this sky different was the huge red sun that sat high like it was noon instead of twilight. He stared at the sky for a few seconds, watching pinkish clouds drift by. This setting seemed so incredibly familiar, yet so strange to him. Confusion quickly set in as he climbed slowly to his feet and could get a good look at the rest of the area.

A floral scent hit his nostrils, so strange, yet not at all unpleasant. He looked down to find that the ‘grass’ was so tall that it touched his elbows.
