Inviting Rory into my room is a gamble. This is my sanctuary; my place where I can let down my guard and be myself. Except for my mom, no one - not even Arben on that awful night - has ever been in here. Omegas are all about scents and we have a bad case of OCD when it comes to our belongings. Things have to smell a certain way, and sit just so. Anything that disturbs the order of our private spaces is like a great big slap in the face.

And being raped on the living room floor is an abuse on a whole other level.

When I was whisked off to boarding school, my mom tried to get my dad to move us to a new apartment near the Tower. But he refused, telling her I needed to reclaim my territory. Typical alpha bullshit, and the first time I came back, I had a full-blown panic attack outside the door. I simply couldn’t cross the threshold, and mom had to raid the emergency fund to pay for a hotel room for a few nights. But when I finally dragged my ass back, someone had installed a fancy new security system. Mom always praised dad for it, but I suspected it was Arben’s doing. He didn’t want anything more to do with me, but he wasn’t going to let me get hurt again, either.

I blink away the memories, focusing on the familiar feel of the doorknob in my hand. But I still hesitate.

Do I really want Rory in here?

Despite his apologies, that easy trust between us is gone. Maybe I should just send him downstairs while I take a nap. Or he could go for a walk; give me time to find my feet again on my own. Anxiety bubbles in my gut, along with an echo of my anger. Okay, so tossing him out of the house might be a bit much, but why should I let him into the last refuge I have?

I turn and study him. His hypnotic green eyes are a little wilder than usual and his mouth is tight with what might be pain. Maybe he gets how big a deal this is for me. Or it could just be his wolf I’m sensing. The nest is sacred between alphas and omegas, and from the plume of arousal on the air, I’m guess he hopes my wolf is about to let him back in.

But only an inch, I warn her as I open the door.

She fires back the wolfy version of a saucy response: Give or take another ten.

I want to roll my eyes at her, but there’s no point pretending this isn’t about our beasts. As I step through the door and he follows close behind, my stomach flips. His breath is a warm puff on the back of my neck, his body so close I think I can hear the beat of his heart. He’s quiet, listening as I point out random details, but it’s a bit like having a lion on a leash.
