Fifteen

Bryce walked into the police station. He adjusted the collar of his jacket as walked past a flurry of drunks and criminals or drunken criminals. His partner, Marcus Gilbert, was a tall chocolate man that all the ladies in the precinct swooned over. They often joked about baby mamas he could have if he just whipped out ‘Big Daddy Thick Dick.’ “I got something for you.” He handed an envelope to Bryce as they headed toward their small but private office.

Bryce tore it open to read the contents then looked up at his partner. “So there was an excessive amount of salmonella in his bloodstream, causing his strep to mutate into the flesh eating virus. Really? That shit happens?”

“That’s what it looks like. But I’ve known you for a long time, so what are you thinking?”

Bryce put the papers back inside the folder. “This Mara chick gets under my skin. Something’s dirty. She admitted to me that she served him chicken the night before his death.”

“Ah, I see where you’re going. Are you sure you’re looking at the right sister?”

Bryce scowled at his friend. “Come on, man, are you kiddin’ me right now? Krista is beautiful, you gotta give her that, Marcus.”

“Krista, huh?”

“Man,” Bryce groaned.

“She’s fine, but does it cloud your vision about the investigation?”

Bryce wiped his face then leaned forward. “I might’ve told her the case is over?”

“Well, officially it’s supposed to be, but you keep digging, I’m wondering if you have a big enough shovel for the shit you’re uncovering,” Marcus said.

Bryce walked to the far wall. “You trust me?”

“Yeah man.”

“Then trust when I say Mara is up to something. Krista told me her agent in New York is dead, too. I mean, death follows this girl.”

“Considering that it does seem like folks come dead or dying around this girl, but she’s no longer here. Case closed.”

Bryce put the folder against Marcus’ broad chest. “Don’t you have contacts in a NYC precinct?”

Diggs furrowed his brow. “I do and I have a sneaky suspicion I’ll be cashing in a favor.”

“I’ll owe you one.”

Marcus picked up the phone and dialed. “You owe me double.”

“Find out about a literary agent named Kevin Grissely… Graham… something like that and see if you can get the official cause of death.”

“I’ll find out.”

Bryce strolled out of the office as he tugged out his cell phone to call Krista.

“Hello?” She sounded groggy.

“Did I wake you?” He wiped his brow.

“No,” Krista said through a yawn.

Bryce glimpsed at his watch…six in the morning was even too early for him at times. “I’m thinking of you is all, go back to sleep.”

Krista yawned again. “You’re so sweet.”

Bryce laughed. “Don’t tell my partner. I have a question and yes, it’s Mara-related…what is her agent’s name? Does she have another one?”

“Kevin Graham, I think. Why? Henry something is taking over. Is something going on?”

He nodded at Marcus then mouthed the word ‘Graham.’ “No, not on my end. I told you my part in all that is over. Only wanted you to know you’re on my mind.
