Drew: Do not contact me again. Nothing good can come of it.

Schnucki: This isn’t like you, Drew. I’m very sorry you’re acting like this.

The problem was, Chase was not a reasonable man. Maybe it was easy to misconstrue tone in a text, but his next words made everything clear.

Schnucki: You’re going to regret leaving me. We WILL be together again.

Drew: Don’t contact me again.

I hit ‘block’ and set my phone face down on the table. It rang instantly. “Scheiße!” Whatever nervous energy remained succumbed to the overwhelming tide of anger. What right did he think he had to harass me like this. It didn’t even make sense. We broke up so long ago. He cheated on me!

“Just leave me alone!” I snapped.

“Um, Mr. Engel?” The woman on the phone sounded terrified.

“Oh, god. I’m so sorry.” I swiped a hand through my hair again. “This is Mr. Engel. How can I help you?”

“This is Lauren from Greenfield Mercedes. Your car is ready, and you can pick it up before five o’clock this evening or tomorrow.”

My phone said four-thirty. I’d have to rush too much to get there before the shop closed. “Tomorrow morning would be best. Thank you, and I am so very sorry about snapping at you. I thought the call was from someone else.” Someone I shouldn’t answer the phone for. It wouldn’t do any good to say anything else to Chase.

“That’s quite alright, Mr. Engel. We’ll see you then.”

I slumped in the chair and stared at the vase of tulips in the center of the table. My throat clenched and I blinked back the sting of sudden tears. The image of the bare dirt on the path up to my door came to mind. With a cry, I surged out of the chair, grabbed the tulips, and carried them to the front door. It swung wide, and my shoulders and arms tensed.

I sucked in a deep breath and tamped down some of the unaccustomed rage. Throwing Halcyon Inn’s vase of tulips onto the path wasn’t going to solve anything. I set it on the other side of the Adirondack chair and stared down at it.

The pink tulip from Ty nestled among the yellow and white bunch. I bent, pulled it out gently, cradled it in my hand, and headed back inside. In the bathroom sink, I rinsed one of the water glasses, filled it with clean water and the tulip, and set it back on the table. At least that one brought happy thoughts instead of dark memories and doubt.

I wanted to talk to Ty, but maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to drag that sweet man into my problems. The couch shifted as I sat down and pulled out my phone again. It rang twice before my brother picked up. “Ethan, I think I have a real problem.”

My brother answered with a smile in his voice. “Did that randy couple follow you to the inn? Or what… is something else wrong with the house?” A touch of irritation entered his tone.
