The Decline of the Popularity of the Turkish Model
By the end of 1992, the popularity of the Turkish Model, or at least the support of the West for this Model, began to decline, and by the end of 1993 it ended almost completely. This is mainly because firstly, a few years after the collapse of the USSR it was clear that the influence of Iran in the region was limited and that there was no concrete danger that the Central Asian Republics would adopt the Iranian model. Secondly, with its ânear abroadâ policy, Russia attempted to control the political developments within the lands of the former USSR, and the West remained passive in the face of this development. Furthermore there was no great power vacuum as Russian influence declined but never collapsed completely. Thirdly, there was a fear of pan-Turkism because of the increasing relations between Turkey and Turkic Republics, which exceeded the boundaries of the Turkish Model. Finally, problems within Turkey (problems related to ethnic and religious minorities) played their roles in the decline of Western support for the Turkish Model.
