Andrea’s mind was in a total fog of fear and confusion. She followed Big Al on rubbery legs back to the Hazleton Hotel, panic sitting on her chest making her breathing laboured. Fear pumped through her body, pooling into her numb fingertips. Who was this evil man?! Andrea would not have been surprised to discover that there were actually two Al’s, and this one was the evil twin brother. Where had this man come from? she wondered. How had he managed to fool her so well? She felt sick and disgusted with herself. She had fallen for some dangerous criminal’s “nice guy” act and was now in grave danger. Not only that, what had happened to Vance? Andrea was so anxious about his safety. What if – Andrea pushed that horrible thought out of her head. She must concentrate on keeping herself safe. As soon as possible, she would go search for Vance. That was all she could do at the moment. She needed to be cool and calm and get away from Ol’ Scarface as quickly as possible.

The pendant around her neck bounced against her chest as she walked, serving as a constant reminder that she had sold herself for a lousy piece of jewellery. An expensive one, to be sure, but she loathed it just the same. It wasn’t a gift given with gratitude or affection. It was a bribe. Andrea couldn’t wait to take the stupid thing off her neck and throw it as far away as she could. She wanted to grind it into the gravel crunching beneath her feet. But she knew that Big Al might ask to see it sometime, just to make sure that she still had it. So, playing it safe, she carefully tucked the offending necklace beneath the neck of her t-shirt until she could find a safe hiding place for it. She didn’t want Vance to notice it. He was sure to know who had given it to her and it wouldn’t take him long to figure out that Big Al was planning to have Andrea take over his job.

She trudged along after Big Al, her thoughts whirling. Oh Vance, where are you? Andrea cried silently in the dark tunnel. She could just discern Big Al’s broad back and shoulders several metres in front of her. She glared at his retreating body, wishing that she could make him tell her where Vance was and what he had done with him. Vance was more of a friend than Big Al could ever possibly be! Vance knew how to be a true friend. Big Al was actually a dictator, a power wielding creep who tried to buy and bribe friendship and loyalty. And when that didn’t work, he threatened. Andrea hoped and prayed that she would never have to see him again after this terrifying trip.

They came at last to the Hazleton Hotel’s secret entrance. Big Al was still several metres in front of Andrea. He stood placidly by the concealed door while Andrea slowly caught up.
