Claire spent the rest of the morning looking at news websites on her phone. Would they report on the protest? Would they mention their display? She refreshed and refreshed again, but there was nothing. The prime minister had sacked a member of cabinet and this had completely taken over the newsfeed. When Claire drove past the protest site later that day, the scene made her heart sink. All traces of their handiwork had been stripped from the fence. Yasmin’s chalk art had been smudged into dusty pools of colour. Apart from a good amount of litter, there was no evidence of what went on there that day. Claire sighed. Even though she had suspected this would happen, she was sad to say goodbye to her little flowers.

When she got home, she consoled herself with some screen time. Beautiful World had something new up. She sat straighter on the couch. There were pictures of the crocheted webs again. But, more specifically, there were pictures of the webs that had been on the fence that morning! There was the large one in lime green, the one that said ‘ALL ARE WELCOME’, except it wasn’t tied to the fence, it was pinned to a base board in a light box. Another one, in fluorescent orange, was shown half-made, with the hook still attached. The final photo, taken at night, showed the webs affixed to the fence, before the others had come to decorate things further. Siobhan wasn’t just photographing the spiderwebs. She was the creator!
