Chapter Seventeen

Charlie

Charlie did the only thing she could do after that day: shut herself in her room alone before she made a mistake.

Although she was really starting to think making a mistake might be worth it.

No, Charlie. Rule Three… Rule Three.

She muttered the words to herself as she got ready for bed, her mind wandering to their day and going over their different conversations. It was something she always found herself doing at the end of the day. Maybe it was a mix of OCD, anxiety, or just her own brain, but she always analyzed the different conversations she’d had that day to see how she would respond now or if she could have responded differently.

She remembered the first time she’d mentioned this to her therapist. The woman had laughed softly, told her she wasn’t crazy, and had explained that it was probably something she did as a form of masking and trying to better understand the social cues she’d experienced during the day. It was her brain’s way of learning and making sense of the world.

And after today, the way their conversation and… moments… had completely uprooted her feelings for Page, crumpled them together and thrown them around, she needed to go over everything and every moment. She didn’t know where he fit. And surprisingly, the anxiety she usually experienced when it came to not being able to read someone felt… different this time. She still had trouble reading him fully and probably would for a while. But today had helped her get a tighter grasp on how he reacted to things. Page knew how to mask his emotions when he wanted to.

He was a good actor. But she wasn’t surprised by that, obviously.

When she was finally ready for bed, she found herself restless.

Her brain couldn’t stop thinking about Page. Every time she closed her eyes, there he was. An image of him this morning with his coffee, him fixing their heater, him working on the papers in the bookshop. Him smiling at her, the wind whipping his hair into his eyes.

Charlie groaned, her hands coming up to rub her face. She just needed to distract herself. She would reach for a romance novel, but her eyes were tired from the wind today, so instead, she reached for her vibrator.

It was small but mighty, so when she’d gotten it as a present from Ripley for her birthday one year—it had been a joke between them that Charlie needed one—she had named it Ant- Man when she’d gotten drunk on eggnog. It had stuck.

She turned it on, having cleaned it after the last time she’d used it, and felt the vibrations start. She was so tense, and the moment she closed her eyes and let sensations take over, she felt her shoulders start to relax. The tension in her neck eased.

She had never been able to get off if a guy went down on her immediately. For her, it had always taken more. More teasing, more kissing, more time spent getting to know one another.
