Chapter Eight

A week went by.

Eden in the fall was beautiful, the colors of the trees becoming a resplendent quilt of fiery tones. Autumn was always Sofía and Dana’s favorite time to take a walk along the Leipsic River and stroll through Patriot Park, following the path up to Foster Woods where they would sit hand-in-hand on one of the wooden benches and watch the leaves fall like colorful flakes, fluttering to the ground or dancing in the wind.

This time of year, one smelled change in the air. Sofía always felt a sense of anticipation as the months started to turn toward winter when the thin grip on the way things were started changing into something else. She had told her parents about her true nature in the winter, and Mom had died in the cold months. Now the winds of change blew again, autumnal shifts nudging Sofía into a new season. Something different. Something entirely new.

Emilie came by once a day. The first day, she’d asked Sofía if she would prefer to stay at Esperanza Manor. “I have to stay here,” Sofía said. “In case she finds her way home.” She had expected Dana to come to her senses and return. A day passed, then another and another. Dana had not even sent word. Wherever she had gone with Vincent, she was beyond the ability for the Illuminati to find her. And they were searching.

Dev had stopped by twice, and Sofía had not let him past the threshold of her home. This was her sanctuary with Dana. This was her Great Dream. Sofía wasn’t ready to wake up yet. She certainly wasn’t ready to let reality intermingle with fantasy. She didn’t even know which was which yet.

Hadn’t her time with Dana been real? Their love had been her truth for so long. Sofía had found Dana when she’d thought love was simply a fairy tale parents told their children so they wouldn’t stay at home forever. Dana’s support had saved her from crushing grief after Mom’s death. Their time together was something special, something magical, enchanting enough to rival any starstruck romance between the sister she’d never met and a sorcerous seducer with Potter powers.

Sofía had tried the Allstone on day four of Dana’s absence. She’d asked the gemstone to find her wife and return her home. The Allstone had given her the price. Your old life returned in exchange for your sister’s young life. The stone had offered to make the last few days go away and erase all those amazing things that had happened. For the life of Emilie Mondragon. That cost was too high. The Allstone always wanted blood.

After a week, Sofía started to wonder if Dana might be gone for good. Then a knock. Her heart fluttered. Maybe after all these days, Dana did not want to simply waltz right into the home they’d shared for the last year. Like the romantic movies they watched on this very same sofa, perhaps Dana was standing on the threshold, waiting to step back into her old world.
