Chapter Eight
âTommyâs looking good,â Jack said. âThat was a great save.â
Trish looked up in surprise. Sheâd been coming to Tommyâs softball games for two weeks, and this was the first time sheâd run into Jack. Actually it was the first time sheâd seen him since heâd asked if Tommy was his son. âWhat are you doing here?â
âI came to watch the game,â he said. âHere, hold this.â
Jack handed her a large soda and set his lawn chair down next to hers on the edge of the ball field.
âNo, really,â Trish said. âWhy are you here?â
âBe-cause,â he said with a heart-stopping grin. âThere was someone here I wanted to see.â
For the briefest of moments, Trish fantasized that it was her heâd come to see, until his gaze slid over to where his nephew was warming up on the sidelines.
Of course. Heâd come to watch Matt play. She handed him back the plastic tumbler. âHere.â
Jack put his hand around the cup, but didnât pull it from her grasp. âWant a drink?â
âNo, thanks. I donât drink soda.â
Jack shrugged and took the drink from her. âMy sister doesnât like the taste, either.â
âThe taste is okay.â Trish leaned back and stretched her legs out before her. âItâs the calories I donât like.â
âYou donât look like you need to worry about it,â he said.
âYeah, right,â she scoffed. âIâm a regular beauty queen.â
Today, sheâd rushed getting ready and had simply pulled her hair up in a ball cap, put on a tank top and a pair of khaki shorts and called it good.
His gaze roved and lazily appraised her scantily clad body. âYou look pretty beautiful to me.â
Her skin prickled beneath his gaze. Trish lifted her chin and resisted the urge to cross her arms across her chest.
âIâve missed seeing you,â he said softly. âI would have called butââ
âYou donât owe me an explanation.â Trish shifted in her chair and gave a little laugh.
Jack paused for a moment, clearly nonplussed.
âWell, even if you didnât miss me,â Jack said, âI missed you. In fact, I was wondering if you and Tommy would like to go to Kansas City with me tonight. We could have dinner? Maybe catch a movie?â
âIâm afraid Tommy has a birthday party, actually a sleepover, tonight,â Trish said.
âWhat about you?â
It was the unsure look in his eyes and the fact that she had missed him that stopped Trish from lying and saying she had plans. Anyway, what would be so wrong with spending the evening together?
âA movie does sound kind of fun,â she said. âDo I get to pick which one?â
He bantered with her about the movie during the rest of the game and on the ride to drop Tommy off at his party. It wasnât until theyâd reached Kansas City that he gave in and let her have her way, rolling his eyes when she picked a âchick flick.â
But afterward, when he wanted âsomething sweet,â she let him choose the place. He picked a gourmet ice-cream parlor in a quaint little building in Country Club Plaza.
