Chapter Eight

“Tommy’s looking good,” Jack said. “That was a great save.”

Trish looked up in surprise. She’d been coming to Tommy’s softball games for two weeks, and this was the first time she’d run into Jack. Actually it was the first time she’d seen him since he’d asked if Tommy was his son. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to watch the game,” he said. “Here, hold this.”

Jack handed her a large soda and set his lawn chair down next to hers on the edge of the ball field.

“No, really,” Trish said. “Why are you here?”

“Be-cause,” he said with a heart-stopping grin. “There was someone here I wanted to see.”

For the briefest of moments, Trish fantasized that it was her he’d come to see, until his gaze slid over to where his nephew was warming up on the sidelines.

Of course. He’d come to watch Matt play. She handed him back the plastic tumbler. “Here.”

Jack put his hand around the cup, but didn’t pull it from her grasp. “Want a drink?”

“No, thanks. I don’t drink soda.”

Jack shrugged and took the drink from her. “My sister doesn’t like the taste, either.”

“The taste is okay.” Trish leaned back and stretched her legs out before her. “It’s the calories I don’t like.”

“You don’t look like you need to worry about it,” he said.

“Yeah, right,” she scoffed. “I’m a regular beauty queen.”

Today, she’d rushed getting ready and had simply pulled her hair up in a ball cap, put on a tank top and a pair of khaki shorts and called it good.

His gaze roved and lazily appraised her scantily clad body. “You look pretty beautiful to me.”

Her skin prickled beneath his gaze. Trish lifted her chin and resisted the urge to cross her arms across her chest.

“I’ve missed seeing you,” he said softly. “I would have called but—”

“You don’t owe me an explanation.” Trish shifted in her chair and gave a little laugh.

Jack paused for a moment, clearly nonplussed.

“Well, even if you didn’t miss me,” Jack said, “I missed you. In fact, I was wondering if you and Tommy would like to go to Kansas City with me tonight. We could have dinner? Maybe catch a movie?”

“I’m afraid Tommy has a birthday party, actually a sleepover, tonight,” Trish said.

“What about you?”

It was the unsure look in his eyes and the fact that she had missed him that stopped Trish from lying and saying she had plans. Anyway, what would be so wrong with spending the evening together?

“A movie does sound kind of fun,” she said. “Do I get to pick which one?”

He bantered with her about the movie during the rest of the game and on the ride to drop Tommy off at his party. It wasn’t until they’d reached Kansas City that he gave in and let her have her way, rolling his eyes when she picked a “chick flick.”

But afterward, when he wanted “something sweet,” she let him choose the place. He picked a gourmet ice-cream parlor in a quaint little building in Country Club Plaza.
