Chapter Twenty-Six

“Are you fucking insane?” was the way Kasper greeted us. “No. Get her out of here.”

“She insisted.” Kyran stared at the adorable craftsman-style house. It was painted blue and gray, with a porch swing, and a stained glass window in the door.

And a ghost.

“I don't care what she said. Tie her up and put her in the trunk if you have to,” Kasper growled.

“I fucking dare you,” I growled back at him.

Kas jerked back but held my stare. “This isn't safe for you, Wren. We have to protect you.”

“So I keep hearing. But I have to see what I'm getting myself into. I'll stay out of your way.”

Kasper snorted. “There is nowhere that will be out of our way.”

“Enough. You're wasting time,” Kellan said through the earpiece Ky had given me. “The wife is at her mother's. You have all night, but that soul isn't getting any fresher.”

“Fine,” Kas said as he turned and strode up the steps.

“The key is taped to the back of the sign,” Kellan said.

“What sign?” Kasper looked around. “Oh.”

He yanked a sign off the wall. It was one of those tin signs with a saying written on it. It read, “World's Okay-est Neighbor.” Kas found the key, used it, replaced it, and put the sign back. He entered the house without looking back.

“Stay behind me,” Kyran said and followed.

For a second, I hesitated. This was an idiot move. I knew it even without Kas growling at me. But if I was going to be involved with them any deeper than I already was, I needed to know exactly what they faced when they left me. It would be hard enough to be the one waiting at home without knowing what they did. And it wasn't about them getting hurt. They were immortal. I'd seen Kasper's wounds go from critical to scratches in seconds. No, this was about them. What Hades created them to do. I wanted to see it for myself. In person, not through a screen. To know that they weren't hurting these souls. That they were the good guys.

Yeah, I guess it was human nature to want to be on the good side. According to Ky, there was no good or bad. It was all perception. But I needed to perceive them as good or I'd feel bad about being with them. And I didn't want to weaken my soul, did I? I had to follow the vibration that felt right for me.

So, I followed Kyran inside.

I expected it to be cold. Isn't that what they say about hauntings? Something about the soul using heat as energy. But the house was at a comfortable temperature and seemed normal. Cheap oil paintings hung on the walls along with family photos. Although, this family was only two people and a dog. Two women. They looked really happy with their labradoodle. There were pictures of them standing before a waterfall, holding hands at a dining table, and a big one of them on a beach in white sundresses with a minister behind them.
