The bike ride back to town went quickly. The boys saw no one on the old stage road until they came to Expedition

Lake. Cody waved to Jeremiah and Larry as each peeled off toward their houses.

He put Denver’s bike inside the garage and burst through the back door. His mother and father sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee.

“Hey, listen to this. That black pickup was out at Feather’s, but they didn’t steal anything. Feather and her mother aren’t going to move until at least October. There’s some kind of trouble with her dad, but I don’t know what it is. And I’ve got the license number of that Isuzu.”

“Nevada, WGL 503?” Cody’s dad queried.

“What? How did you know that?”

“The sheriff just called to report that a pickup with that plate number just tumbled off Eagle Point into the rocks by the river breaks. He wants you to come down and identify the remains.”

“Remains of what?” Cody gasped.

“The truck. Apparently there was no one in it.”
