CHAPTER 16
Dominique parked the Ford Explorer in front of her house. She sat there, sad and distraught. The school shooting, Tre Pound laying there, the hospital, not knowing if he was going to survive—it was horrible.
First, there was the chance Tre Pound could have been sentenced to life in prison. Now there was a strong possibility he could die on a hospital bed. The way things were going, he and Dominique would never get to be a couple. She promised herself that if he recovered, she wouldn’t waste any more time making him the one, officially.
Marlon came out the house and loaded a duffel bag into an old white van. Then out came the rest of his friends, each carrying bags of their own. They made a couple more trips in and out the house before Dominique stepped out the Explorer.
"What’s goin’ on?" she asked.
The guys ignored her.
She grabbed onto Stacks before he went back in the house. "What are yall gettin’ ready to do?"
"We gotta ride for da homie," Stacks said, and kept it moving.
Another bag over his shoulder, Marlon came back outside. Dominique recognized the bag; it was made for golf clubs, but her brother used it to store his Mossberg pump shotgun.
"Marlon, you leavin’ wit’ them?" she asked, following him to the van.
"I thought you was at the hospital."
"I was, but they made everybody leave who wasn’t family."
Marlon tossed the golf bag in the back of the van. He turned to look at his sister’s sorrowful expression. "Is he gon’ make it?"
"I don’t know. He’s in critical condition."
"Well, get in the house. Lock the doors. Don’t even answer if somebody knocks. I’ll be back in a minute."
"But you’re on house arrest. You can’t go."
Moses and Stacks hopped in the back and Marlon shut the doors. Playa Paul got in the driver’s seat; he was the best behind the wheel. But as Marlon got in the passenger seat, Dominique stood in the way so he couldn’t shut his door.
"Get out the way, Dominique."
Though she wanted the bastards who shot her lover to be dealt with, she didn’t want Marlon to get killed in the process. However, she knew the rules of the game, about retaliation, and loyalty amongst friends. Her brother had to ride. She wouldn’t be able to talk him out of it. The best thing she could do was be supportive.
"Make sure you get ‘em, Marlon."
"I am. Just get in the house."
Dominique stepped away from the curb and watched the van putter away.
