DESTINATION: Loblolly Bay Beach, Anegada, British Virgin Islands
If you’re feeling strong enough to travel to the British Virgin Islands, then there’s one beach you shouldn’t miss: Loblolly Bay Beach. This is a beach that’s absolutely worth the time it takes to travel there.
If you’re asking, “Lob what? Where is that?” that’s perfect! This is exactly why this beach is so special—because most people have never even heard of it. I’ve visited this ultra-secluded beach several times over the last fifteen years and always worry it’s going to become “discovered.” I have nightmares about visiting and finding the beach lined with hotels and packed with people. Thankfully, the beach has hardly changed over the past decade. It’s considered crowded if you see more than a dozen people.
That said, some people may wonder why I would share this best-kept secret, one of my personal favorite escapes. Here’s why: It’s hard on your body, mind, and spirit to get over a serious illness, and if sharing this TRAVEL THERAPY destination helps even one person, I’m all for it. After all, that’s what this book is all about, sharing the best of the best.
I discovered Loblolly Bay Beach on my first sailing trip in the British Virgin Islands in the 1990s. I had heard about an island called Anegada, where most charter sailors aren’t allowed to go to because of a treacherous reef surrounding the island that’s said to have caused more than two hundred shipwrecks. Of course, this made me want to go more. I’m always searching out those places that most people don’t go to in hopes of finding a secret paradise. I made sure the captain on the sailboat I chartered was qualified to sail to Anegada. He warned us that we might not be able to get close enough to go ashore if the weather conditions didn’t cooperate. Still, we decided to give it a shot.
We were in luck! We were able to anchor off the island and take our dinghy to the dock. Once we got ashore, we asked the only two people on the dock where the best beach was. They told us it was on the other side of the island and we would have to take a cab. “A cab?” I asked, mystified because there were no cars in sight, only a dirt road. I was skeptical, but within ten minutes a pickup truck showed up with some makeshift seats in the flatbed. After a bumpy ride we were deposited in front of a narrow path, and our driver told us to just walk through the thick tropical foliage and we’d find the beach—and we found one of the most spectacular beaches I’ve ever seen.
I was speechless. There wasn’t another soul on the beach, and I felt like the world had opened up and dropped me onto one of the most magnificent stretches of beach.
