Chapter 8: Juno

I’ve just woken up but already I’m in a cold sweat. Today is the day Diana put our plan into motion. Years of dreaming and scheming and months of laying the foundation all come down to today. While I head up the drill team and collect the samples, Diana and her assistant Lainie will break off from the exploration team and hunt for the Nasidium in the old Science Center. It should work because explorers work in teams of two and Lainie is someone we can trust.

Last night Diana told me she has a bad feeling about today and I got on her case. I don’t believe in any of that supernatural crap like she does, but it still spooked me. I told her to focus on what’s real. We’re here. We’re prepared. This is our only opportunity to find the crystals our aunt Bee told us about. Diana agreed, but I could tell she looked nervous.

Despite my confident words, my insides are roiling. I can’t let anything happen to my sister, or to any member of my crew, for that matter. I care about each and every one of them. Of course, just as I think that Ben strolls by looking huge and rugged and I just feel like screaming at the heavens. Here’s one more thing to worry about. One more person to care about. One more thing I want for myself. Because I can’t lie and say I don’t care, or even worse, that I wouldn’t drop everything in a heartbeat if he asked me to.

What I wouldn’t give for another quick chat over tea with him right now, and even better, following the tea with a nice slow fuck in my quarters. I don’t know what it is about this guy, but he seems to short-circuit every rational thought in my body. When I see him, I get a bone-deep reaction. Want. Must have. I’m yours. And somehow, I trust him too, which is weird, because all I know about him is that has a great body and impeccable taste in tea. And he looks at me as if I could single-handedly hold the heavens aloft. That’s something too.

I shake my head and look as confident as I can as I stride over to each team preparing for the day. I’m going to make sure everything goes off without a hitch.

Everything is going wrong. The big things. The small things. Just everything. Almost as soon as we arrived at the dig site, the legendary Tempesta winds started kicking up. Even our best software can’t accurately predict when this will happen, so it was simultaneously a surprise and not a surprise. Despite our preparations, our comms have been spotty too and we’ve had three shields break. When I can get a signal, I notice we’re in the path of the windstorm and Diana is not far off. The transportation hub will be the least stormy part of the planet.

Right now, I’m waiting to hear how Diana’s team is doing.
