COGNITIVE DISSONANCE: WRESTLING WITH DATA TO CONSTRUCT MEANING
In Stage Three of the SafeMeasures⢠process, school climate meets teacher culture head-on. This stage of data analysis and goal setting has everything to do with teachers learning about the school climate issues and needs that are most prevalent in their school. The first two stages of forming student and adult leadership teams and conducting schoolwide surveys are relatively easy and nonthreatening leadership tasks. While it may be a bit unfamiliar to include students in the process and to ask for feedback from all teachers and students, not much about school norms needs to change to take these first steps as a school begins its journey to improve school climate.
In Stage Three, schools look closely at their school climate data. This examination of a schoolâs climate from student, teacher, and parent perspectives can be (and usually is) a bit of an awakening at most schools. With honest introspection, most people in any school would admit there are obviously areas for improvement. Confronting this reality in concrete termsâwith words and numbers identifying specifically these shortcomings everyone knows existâcan lead some to defensiveness, criticism, and denial. For others, it provides the evidence they have been looking for to point out what, to them, are persistent flaws, problems, or issues. The evidence illustrates that it is finally time to address the issues head-on.
