4.2 Characterizing Learners and Learner Engagement

To characterize learners and their engagement, we count the number of comments of each type that a student made to create student profiles. These profiles are then related to the data collected about students in the form of MSLQ scores, conceptual knowledge pre- and post-tests (c.f. Section 3) and scores for a group presentation the students gave after the learning activity. For the experimental group, we also included the number of nudges a student received. Statistical measures were reported as significant for . The number of different comments in the different categories and the number of learners who posted such comments are summarized in Table 1.Table 1.Statistics of comments in different classes.
