How Skill 9 Is Normally Acquired, Practiced And Propagated

We learn Skill 9 because family members use the skill with us. They respect our limitations, back off and lower their voice at just the right times because they observe we are overwhelmed. They give us a language when, after stopping, they name the moment then repair with, “Wow, I just scared you didn’t I? I am sorry; are you ok?”

As children we practice Skill 9 with play, usually through wrestling, splashing, chasing and tickling games where we have to regulate our energy levels all the while noticing how the other person is doing. We propagate Skill 9 when we interact with our peers and community members. Similar to a referee during a basketball game, we point out when people “travel with the ball73” or foul other players, and we stop the game momentarily. We help people learn to pay attention to subtle body cues that scream, “Stop. I’m overwhelmed!” Parents, teachers, coaches and service providers are in ideal positions to train Skill 9.
