Random or Not: That Is the Question

From our journey so far, one might conclude that I'm advocating for a view that everything is entirely up to chance. That couldn't be further from the truth. Contrarily, I don't view the market, or life for that matter, as being completely random. In my opinion, the notion of things appearing “random” stems more from the gaps in our understanding than from the actual nature of events themselves. I'm a determinist at heart. Determinism is the philosophical stance that every occurrence, including human choices and behaviors, is inevitably shaped by preceding events or determinants. This posits that we exist within an intricate, vast web of cause and effect, so expansive and convoluted that our finite minds struggle to grasp its entirety.

If we were to journey through the annals of time, we'd recognize a sequence of events meticulously leading to our present. This is but a brief snapshot of the events that occurred: Everything begins with nothingness: From this impossible‐to‐conceptualize, “nothingness” erupts a burst of immense energy, giving birth to an ever‐expanding universe. Originating from a dimensionless, eternal singularity, this universe grows and morphs, governed by a handful of unwavering deterministic laws. Particles dance and merge, forming atoms. These atoms come together to birth molecules, and soon, these molecules begin crafting the perceivable reality we know. Chaos subtly transitions into order, laying the foundation for celestial bodies: stars are kindled, and much later, planets coalesce. Now, something even more miraculous happens. On a tiny, seemingly inconsequential orb, the once‐inanimate matter begins a transformative journey toward life. What once was simple now grows in complexity, exhibiting consciousness—a capability to sense, to feel, to experience existence. And as the journey continues, humans emerge. The intricate web of cause and effect, possibly absent of overt intent, results in our being. We are unique arrangements of atoms and molecules, cosmic melodies if you will, finding our place in this boundless and perhaps purposeless universe. At our core, we are but matter with an illusory sense of self, a transient perception of an “I.”

Following this vast ocean of events, along with countless sequences of other events that could fill entire libraries, here you find yourself in this moment, reading this book. However, for me, my penning down this book is already a distant memory, a reflection in the rearview mirror of time. Currently, as I write this, I'm sitting in the comforts of my home office. It's a beautiful day—a bit grey but beautiful, nonetheless. Mere moments ago, I was getting ready to head to the beach, but a surge of inspiration regarding this chapter kept me tethered to my desk. This very instant, my senses are awash with various stimuli. The subtle aroma of lemongrass wafts from my air diffuser, inexplicably evoking memories of my grandmother. In the distance, I can hear the neighbor mowing his lawn. Each sensory detail, every nuance I perceive in this moment, is the culmination of a myriad of preceding causes. They have coalesced to craft this exact experience.
