Chapter 65

“Catfish Landing looks the same as it did when I left,” Jim observed.

“Did you expect something different lad?” Abel asked. The elder smith had taken to riding and driving the wagon more since Kayja had taken down the cervus and was currently driving the wagon now. Neither Ari nor Jim minded as it let them snatch a little alone time. “It’s only been two weeks give or take since you left the last time.”

“Yeah. I was sort of hoping they had at least started on the mill that was talked about.”

“It’s not much to look at,” Ariana observed.

“Most villages are like this,” Abel replied. “Most folks just want to live their lives in peace in villages like this. So long as there is a tavern or inn that serves mead and other drink, they are typically happy enough.”

“I suppose that is true of most,” Ari agreed. “Have you guys thought about what you want your wagon to look like on the inside? There will be five of you sharing it.”

“Aye lass. We want something like this one, but with bunk beds at the rear instead of the storage space and pull-out table. Then we want to put the bathroom halfway on the left beside the small kitchen. On the right we want some storage space and bench across from the bathroom and at the front, a fold out bed for me.”

“Then you have to get it enchanted,” Jim added.

“Aye. We can do that at Diamond Shoals.”

“Which way are we going?” Rhett called back to the wagon.

“Take the path to the left and we’ll circle around to Nora’s shop,” Jim answered.

“Alright.”

“Jim, what are you doing back? I thought you were going to head east from Raven’s Rest,” Nora said in greeting.

“Plans changed,” Jim answered.

“Well, it’s nice to see you again,” Nora smiled. Jim noticed the smile didn’t quite touch her eyes as her smiles had before. He suspected something was going on that he would not like.

“Aye, it’s good to see you too,” Jim replied. His smile was more genuine. “Where is Wyatt?”

“Working on Michael Barrett’s wagon. Have you come for sake and rice?”

“I brought you some customers actually. My smith and guards want a wagon. But I’ll take what sake is available and some rice too.”

“Is that Jim’s voice I hear?” Wyatt asked as he exited the shop. Like his wife’s, Wyatt’s smile did not quite reach his eyes. “What’s this about customers?”

“Lad, we need a wagon,” Abel spoke up.

“It’ll be a month at least before I can get to it.”

“We need it faster than that,” Rhett replied.

“Can’t be helped. Michael Barrett wants three. The first is almost done, but I’ll still have to do his others before I can work on someone else’s order.”

“You won’t make an exception for a friend that is willing to assist you in finishing your current project?” Ariana asked. “Even one that gave you the wagon design and sake production?”

“And who might you be?” Nora asked Ariana.

“Ariana, Jim’s companion or maybe consort, and alchemist.
