As soon as we safely make it into the woods, Seth calls 911. Hopefully, help will show up soon.

We crouch behind a large bush and my knees get wet and cold from the ground, but they are not nearly as frozen as the rest of me. Seth keeps trying to peek over the top of the bush, to get a look inside, but I keep pulling him back down. His jaw is clenched, and he keeps pushing my hand away, so I can tell that he’s annoyed with me, but I don’t care. I don’t feel like being murdered today, and our best chance for survival is by not giving away our position.

We hear a loud crash, followed by three loud pops, which I assume is gunfire. I don’t know what the heck he would be shooting at, though, since, as far as we know, the only other beings inside are ghosts.

Several minutes go by, which feels more like hours, but at least my breathing has finally slowed to normal and my heartbeat isn’t about to pound through my ears anymore.

“Seems quiet,” Seth whispers. “Do you think he left?”

I shrug and lift my hands, making a gesture for him to wait.

“The cops should be here soon,” he says. “Don’t worry. I won’t try to be a hero.”

I’m startled by the sudden appearance of Holloway. She just popped in, and is standing right behind Seth.

“What is it, Sara?” Seth asks, concern plastered all over his face.

I point over his shoulder, and he turns to look, but of course, sees nothing. “What?” he says. “I don’t see anything.”

I am about to mouth the name Holloway when the realization hits him.

“The girls are behind me?” he asks.

I hold up one finger and mouth, Holloway.

“That Jackass is gone,” Holloway tells me. “Ezra is staying with him to see where he goes, and to make sure he doesn’t head back this way.”

“Do you think it’s safe to go inside?” I ask. “What the heck was he doing in there anyway?”

“He went straight for Malone’s office,” she said. “He trashed the place and seemed to be searching for something in particular. Got really mad when he couldn’t find whatever it was and shot the laptop a few times.”

I nod my head, processing the information.

“What is it, Sara?” Seth asks. “Did he leave?”

I nod at Seth, and he takes off toward the house before I can protest, worrying me that the cops will show up and think that he is the intruder and accidently shoot him or something. But relief floods through me when I catch up to him and he’s already on the phone, letting the police know that he’s in the house and that the bad guy has left.

“They want us to go wait outside,” he says as he ends the call, “so we don’t contaminate the crime scene or mess up any evidence.”

That makes good sense to me.

I need to tell Seth what Holloway told me outside, so I grab my voice box and start typing away as he stares at me, waiting.
