Chapter Five
The Talk
The Miller Residence
Tuesday, May 22nd
4 pm
After driving around the Stanton Stretch a little bit to finally gain the courage to talk to Sam's parents, I headed to his house on the south side of town in Stanton Place.
Only a few kids I knew actually lived in Forest Haven. It seemed to be where the new families moved to have the convenience factor of being so close to the school, and then maybe when they decided to move, they'd come on by Stanton Place to see what was for sale.
Recently, I hadn't seen any homes sell in my neighborhood, but the neighborhood was vast and stretched off and around to farther lengths than I wanted to explore, so maybe there was a house somewhere.
But you'd just have to check with a local realtor, today.
Anyway, all jokes aside, when I pulled up to the curb by Sam's house, I got the same sickening feeling I developed when I told Emily the theory about Sam being murdered. This time, I wasn't ready for the sick feeling's return, and I didn't make a warm welcome for it, so it hit me hard and I started to gag like I was about to throw up. Luckily, some bottled water that I had left over from an unknown date was in my cup holder and chugging the rest down helped me not throw up.
For now, that is.
Then, stepping out of my car after putting it in park and turning it off, I felt weird and misplaced while walking up the concrete walkway. The house was inviting with different assorted plants potted on the front porch, but I still had a weird feeling crawling up and down my spine like an indecisive spider.
And even when I stepped up to the door, I choked. Just the thought of talking to Sam's Mom and Dad about the possibility of Sam being killed by another student or just anything other than suicide made me worried about how this would all go down. If Emily flipped, I was sure Sam's parents ate together. Seemed like a lot of firsts were happening today... but none of them were really that exciting.
I tried to take a bite of the lasagna, but it was too hot and I really wasn't in the mood to burn my tongue. I thought about things I was in the mood for, but a few weren't appropriate.
"So, Jack, how's school?" my Mom asked.
"It's going," I answered.
"Well, is that good or bad?"
"A little of both."
"Well, then that's good. Nothing hurts when there's a little equality." "Yeah, I guess so," I said darkly.
My Mom caught onto my tone and gave me a funny look.
"Now wait just a minute, Jack, what happened to the little of both?
Now you just make everything seem worse."
"I miss Sam, Mom, that's all."
My Mom scrunched her face and said, "I know sweetie, it's really hard when a friend passes."
"Didn't someone die when you were in high school?"
My Mom wiped some lasagna sauce off of her
