The freight man began closing the freight yard doors.

BANG! SLAM! SQUEAK!

The sounds were hurting my ears. In a loud voice, the Tree Man said, “Okay, close up for the night. Turn off the lights, count the money and let’s go home.” “What about this tree?” I begged. “Oh, that one. Tomorrow we’ll chop it up for firewood Just leave it there against the fence.”

Hopeful, I said to Tommy, “Please don’t be sad. You ARE special. Someone WILL come.”

“But when?” questioned Tommy. “Tomorrow is Christmas and I don’t want to become firewood!”

“Young lady, let’s go. Teenagers should be at home. We have to close up!” ordered the Tree Man. “Good-bye Tommy,” I whispered. I walked toward the gate with a slow step, my heart hurting for the lonesome tree.
