Chapter Twenty-Seven

Marissa

When the kitchen door opened Archer and I jumped apart like we’d been doing something wrong. Had we?

My knuckles felt burned where he’d touched me.

Yes, we’d definitely been about to cross a line.

I was grateful Archer’s mom showed up when she did. I quickly dried my hands while Archer introduced me to his mother.

“Hello Mrs. Montgomery. So nice to meet you.”

The birdlike woman stopped short, putting a hand to her heart. “Oh! I didn’t know we had company. Archer! A little warning next time. I would’ve straightened the house a bit more.”

“Your home is lovely,” I replied.

“Oh, you don’t have to say that,” she said waving off my compliment.

Well, I guess I know where Archer’s modesty comes from. But it didn’t seem he’d inherited much else from the tiny woman. She was as thin as a fiddle string and she wrung her hands as though she ate worry by the spoonful. I found myself wondering how in the world she’d birthed such a titan of a son.

“I hope the girls weren’t too much of a pain. I’m really sorry they ruined your date,” Mrs. Montgomery said.

“Actually, we had a great night, Mom. Marissa taught the girls how to bake.”

Mrs. Montgomery’s pretty blue eyes widened. “Really? And the kitchen’s still standing?”

Luckily, we’d had time to clean most of the kitchen while the cake was in the oven. The only mess remaining were the few dishes still in the sink.

“Well, I’ll take over so you two can have some fun,” she said.

“Oh, there’s only a few more dishes,” I objected.

“Nonsense,” she said shooing us from the kitchen. “Go be young and in love.”

I felt my cheeks burn at the word love. When had our fake relationship gotten so complicated?

We were supposed to want people to think we were in love. But now I was worried about the fallout. Maybe we should’ve thought this through a bit more.

Archer’s family was so sweet. I didn’t want to cause them harm. I know it was silly to worry about a fake breakup, but there was nothing fake about how much fun I’d had with his sisters tonight. Once this thing ended between us did it mean fun nights like tonight would end, too?

“So,” Archer said pulling me from my thoughts. “It’s too late to catch the show but we can still go out for a bit if you want?”

“I’m not really in the mood to go out.”

Archer’s face fell. “Oh. Do you want to go home?”

“I didn’t say that,” I replied quickly. “I’d just rather hang out here.”

“Really?” his face brightened.

“Really.”

I’d surprised myself with that admission, but it was true. I’d had a great time tonight and maybe it was my sudden worry that it might end along with our fake relationship, but I wasn’t ready to give it all up just yet.

“So, what do you wanna do?” Archer asked.

“How ‘bout you show me your bedroom?”

Archer’s whole face turned red.

I gave him a playful shove. “Not like that, perv. I just wanna see where all the love songs are written.
