(European Interlude)

"Four days have passed" – Altus said it morosely. He hardly moved, only sat on his chair and looked at the other two. They had just arrived, almost at the same time. Anger rose in Altus. He didn’t feel himself a diplomat any more, when he lost his temper: - "Why do I have the feeling I’m the only one among us, who cares about Albert Telldro?"

"Because you are predisposed in his favor, as he is your compatriot and colleague." – Terkin responded immediately. Altus was surprised by the quick response. As is Terkin had been prepared for this opposition. He started to have the feeling that Terkin either was a great debater, who can respond in no time or he had been prepared for different, somehow expected situations and he had already made instantly used answers. He suspected the latter one.

Miguel quickly interrupted, before the arguing got out of hand:

"I have news for you."

But Altus didn’t want to hear that. He was looking at Terkin’s face, thick, dark eyebrows:

"We have to convince the committee to pay as soon as possible."

"So we do not stick to the principle that we don’t negotiate with terrorists, we don’t pay them?" – he hardly hid sarcasm, it was still in the room, when Miguel turned on his notebook and turned the screen towards his colleagues:

"This will be shocking!"

It was indeed shocking. They understood it in no time: an amateur had the camera. Who probably felt what he was recording. The distorted face of Albert tied to the jeep. The film had no sound, but when the lash hit the man’s naked back, those present winced. As if they felt the man’s pain, only a tiny part of it, but still they were tortured too. As if they could hear the man’s hoarse scream, the long-drawn-out rattle. Every single beat made him quieter, and increased his torture.

Now even Terkin couldn’t say a word. Altus swallowed a few times. Like when he was a child and the others had been teasing him in school, but it was not allwed to have fights. Though he would have liked to hit them! And above all, he knew he would be beaten up as his classmates were bigger and stronger than him.

Miguel saw this film for the third time. He had got that in the morning from the right place that had been in contact with the mediator. Who might have been a really nice person, not standing on either sides, but had African connections, it was his job. He got his money from both sides for that. Only he knew the way how the information was getting from here to there and back.

"This is. . . terrible!" – Altus groaned. His face was red, he could hardly breathe.

"They sent a message with the film." – Miguel’s voice was hollow. - "They will whip the diplomat every day until they don’t get the money."

"Deal?" – Terkin asked. Miguel stared at him, moisted his lips and coldly said:
