Chapter 19
When he woke it was raining and he was crying. He held the crudely fashioned spear, startled and terrified that it existed.
Had he made it in his sleep? Some sort of sleepwalking incident?
Had his father been here? Her?
Somehow, it had come into existence, and he felt sick to his stomach because he knew exactly what it was for.
Steve.
The question was, did they expect him to go today or tomorrow?
âWhat are you doing? What the fuck are you doing? Heâs a person. Random scraps of flesh and fingertips and teeth are bad enough. But toâ¦â He shook his head and ran a hand through his hair. The hand was shaking very badly.
Ben realized then that the lights were back on. He went and blew out the candles one at a time.
âDad, Jesus fucking Christ, Dad. If that was youâif you were there, I mean, hereâhelp me. You have to be able to. Arenât you supposed to be all magical and shit after you die? Somehow?â
He knew that wasnât true, though. Any more than God was real. It was all a delusion that people shared to feel safer. To feel like they didn't have to be responsible in their own lives. If they failed, God was testing them. If they succeeded, it was thanks to him.
Why did they beg for his help when their children went missing or got sick but praise him when some small success happened in life?
Give all the glory to God, heâd heard people say.
Give all the gory to god.
In his mindâs eye flashed her crown of horns.
Chills raced through him and he realized he was sweating.
He kept the spear in his hand because he didnât know what else to do. He turned off the lights, pulled the workroom door shut, and went up the steps slowly.
He was in the kitchen eating a peanut butter and pickle sandwich when someone knocked on the door.
Christ. Who was it now? This many people hadnât knocked for him in years, and now suddenly, in the last few days, he was Mister Popularity.
He went to the door, wiping his hands on the seat of his jeans.
Alice Day. Trying very hard to peek through the peephole.
It made him laugh.
He pulled the door open. âHey. I was going to text you.â
She sniffed. âYou smell like peanut butter.â
âGood nose.â
âIâm starving.â
He liked that she wasnât shy about asking for stuff. She didnât do the annoying cryptic never asks for what she wants thing so many girls did.
âWant a sandwich?â
âYes, I do. Whatever you had.â
âPeanut butter and pickle.â
She looked intrigued. âOoh, exotic. Iâm in.â
He made her a sandwich as she tried to woo Solace out from under the butcher block.
She had a mouthful of sandwich and a cold bottle of water in her hand when she said, âDid he have it?â
âYep. He did. Itâs on the coffee table.â
âYou. Are. The. Best.â She popped the last bite into her mouth and wolfed it down. Then she grabbed his shoulders, tugged him forward and kissed him.
On the mouth.
Hard.
With tongue.
