Chapter Ten

Lydia had always been excited about weddings. They were a point of great interest for her and her friends, none of whom had yet had the pleasure of marrying but all of whom possessed very serious opinions on the matter. On the few occasions Lydia had attended a wedding she had spent the whole time daydreaming about how she might improve upon it, were the ceremony her own.

Lizzy’s wedding ought to have been no different, but that morning she found her imagination was too stubborn to comply.

“Stop fidgeting!” Kitty hissed, elbowing her sharply in the side.

“I would not need to fidget if you did not insist on sitting close enough to crush me!”

“Be quiet!”

Mary’s sharp whisper and condescending glare ought to have been enough to make allies of the bickering sisters, united in giggling, but this time it merely made Kitty and Lydia glare at one another and return to silently watching Elizabeth pledge to love, honour and obey Mr Darcy.

She seems happy, Lydia thought, watching the light dance across Lizzy’s face as she spoke, her lips fighting to smile with every word she offered. Mr Darcy, too, seemed quite unlike himself. His expression was not the habitual scowl she had grown so used to him wearing. I suppose I ought not to begrudge them their happiness. Lydia sighed again, wishing she did not still feel a bitter annoyance at the way her sister had so easily usurped her in Mr Darcy’s affections. A tiny voice somewhere in the depths of her mind suggested that perhaps his affections could not have been as strong as she might have hoped if he had been so easily turned from them but she ignored that voice, swallowing it with a reminder that things always worked out perfectly for Elizabeth, while she, Lydia, was forever dismissed as too young and silly and blamed perpetually getting herself in scrapes. I am none of those things! And everybody would realise it if only people would take me seriously for once!

She lifted her chin, sweeping her gaze down their row of chairs until it rested on Mr Collins, sitting alone and aloof at the end of the line of sisters. Mr and Mrs Bennet sat separately, in front, clutching one another and beaming proudly at the first of their daughters to make a match. And this was surely a better match than either of them could have envisaged for headstrong, opinionated Elizabeth. Lydia rolled her eyes and turned back to Mr Collins, who wore such a peculiar expression on his round face that she wondered at him. It was not the fact of Lizzy marrying another that upset him, she supposed. What claim did he have to her affections, after all? What Mr Collins might feel was not the same as Lydia’s disappointment over Mr Darcy and she would never dream of comparing herself to her father’s foolish cousin. Mr Collins glanced over his shoulder towards the door to the elegant parlour, then back to the couple standing together at the front of the room.
