CHAPTER SEVEN
NIKO never imagined heâd spend the night quite this wayâcrouched on the edge of his bed, doubled over with his head in his hands, cursing himself. He was beginning to regret his hasty thirst for revenge.
Picturing Kalliâs face, he muttered, âDo you have any clue what kind of damage your buff-bare display did to me?â
Damn! Heâd been so bent on vengeance, heâd stifled any other feelingsâuntil the blasted kiss. That had been troubling enough. Then tonight, when sheâd dropped her robe, heâd felt like heâd been kicked in the gut with a steel-toed boot.
Reliving the moment caused another pile-driving blow to his midsection. He groaned and took up cursing himself. Tonightâs blond experiment was a failure. When he drove her home, heâd found himself inexplicably wanting to drop her at her door, not his original plan by any means. But a cold discontent had flooded through him, making it imperative that he get back to the mansion.
Leaving his date on her front porch hadnât been easy. Sheâd hung on like a chronic cough. With no other choice, heâd resorted to calling her by the wrong name. That had taken neither skill nor luck, since practically any name he could have chosen would have been wrong. The instant he called her by the wrong name, Niko confirmed a suspicion about women. They might want you, might not take no for an answer. But call a date Maybelle when her name is Mindy, and she will instantly turn to ice.
His smile was less due to humor than weary sheepishness. Heâd been a worm tonight. A rat yesterday afternoon in the field, and a worm tonight. He didnât have much further down the vile-life-form list to slide before he was a dirty germ.
âWhy didnât I go with the flow?â he mumbled, perplexed at his behavior.
Why hadnât he indulged in the sensual treats his date offered? Why did he feel punch-drunk and down for the count? What was his problem? Was this hang-up over Kalli a case of wanting what he couldnât have? The lure of forbidden fruit? If so, heâd be relieved when the ripe, little peach finished her work and went back to Kansas.
One sure thing this debacle had taught him was how messy revenge could be, hardly as satisfying as heâd expected. Talk about an ironic backlash. Out of nowhere, like lightning that rips and dazzles, he had a bad burn going for a woman he had every intention of hating.
Kalli worked like a demon, her only recourse if she intended to get her mind off the sordid swimming pool episode. But even as she worked single-mindedly, she wasnât kidding herself. Nothing, not even blunt head trauma and the glorious oblivion of amnesia would wash that living nightmare from her brain.
What had possessed her to swim in the nude? She wasnât in the habit of doing anything so wanton and rash. Just because she hadnât brought a swimsuit was no excuse. Panties and a bra would have been better thanâ¦
