The next morning, Hannah said, âI believe youâre beginning to show some improvement, Andrew.â
Iâd finally hit a marble out of the ring, and she was just as pleased as I was. The sun shone down through the leaves, dappling the ground with shadows. Hidden in the foliage, locusts buzzed and droned. Birds sang in the woods behind us. I felt good. Happy even. Right now, Hannah was all mine.
When she climbed up into the tree, I followed her. Iâd done it yesterday, I could do it again today. This time, instead of going to the top, we sat on a low branch and watched the clouds drift byâbears and elephants, whales and dragons, castles and mountains, one thing shifting to another, always changing, never staying the same.
After a while, Hannah said, âI heard Papa and Mama talking last night. Mama told Papa she thinks John Larkin is fond of me.â
To my annoyance, a little smile danced across her face. âIâm fond of John too,â she admitted, âbut Papaââ
Hannah bit her lip and frowned. âPapa said a girl with my notions will never find a husband. He told Mama Iâd end up an old-maid suffragette. Those were his very words, Andrew.â
Forgetting everything except making her happy, I said, âNo matter what Papa thinks, youâll marry John. Whatâs more, women will get the vote and drive cars and do everything men do, even wear trousers and run for president.â
Hannah sucked in her breath. âThe way you talk, Andrew. I could swear youâve been looking in a crystal ball.â
Clapping my hand over my mouth, I stared at her. Whatever had made me say so much? I didnât even want to think about her marrying John, and here Iâd gone and told her she would, as well as revealing a bunch of other stuff she shouldnât know.
âDo you see anything else in my future?â Hannah was leaning toward me, her face inches from mine, gazing into my eyes, her lips slightly parted. âWill John and I be happy? Will we have lots of children? Will we live a long, long time?â
I tightened my grip on the branch. I was drowning, losing my identity, speaking words that made no sense. âYouâll be old when Iâm young,â I whispered, âbut Iâll remember, Iâll never forget, Iâll always loveââ
âWhat are you talking about?â Hannah reached out and grabbed my shoulders. âAre you all right?â
For a moment, I was too dizzy to answer. I wasnât sure who I was or where I was or what weâd been talking about. Feeling sick, I clung to the tree. Gradually, things came back into focus, the world steadied. Birds sang, leaves rustled, the branches swayed slightly. The strength in Hannahâs hands calmed me.
I took a few deep breaths and managed to smile. Hannah relaxed, but she was obviously still worried. âWill you ever be yourself again, Andrew?â
âI hope so.â I said it so fervently Hannah looked at me oddly. If only I could tell her the truth. Sheâd understand everything then. But would she believe me?
Hannah sighed and wiped the sweat off her face with the back of her hand.
