Watching it all was Popovich. “If Tim throws someone’s shot into the 10th row, he’s not impressed with himself,” Popovich said. “Or if he travels, he doesn’t hang his head. He just keeps competing. You can count on 10 fingers the guys you’ve seen over the years like that.”

When the season started, Tim jumped right into the action. In his second-ever road game, Tim hauled down 22 rebounds against Michael Jordan’s Bulls and big, bad Dennis Rodman. So much for being the nervous rookie.

Tim went on to have a great rookie year and beat out New Jersey’s Keith Van Horn for Rookie of the Year honors, averaging 21.1 points, 11.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.51 blocks in 39.1 minutes while shooting .549 from the field. The Spurs finished with a 56-26 mark and were knocked out in the second round of the NBA playoffs by the Utah Jazz. The regular season record marked the greatest single-season turnaround in league history as the Spurs won 36 more games than the previous season.

The difference was Tim as he became only the 19th rookie in league history to average 20-plus points and 10-plus rebounds. He became the first rookie since Larry Bird in 1980 to be named to the All-NBA first team. One of the statistics that measures a player's success is his ability to notch double figures in points, rebounds or assists. If you reach two of those categories it is called a double-double. In his rookie year, Tim led the NBA in double-doubles with 57.

Those numbers, though, only tell part of the story There was more to Tim than hard work and wonderful statistics. There was the other side of this mountain of a man that made the Spurs come together as a team.
