A few moments after tracing the ritual circle with a fresh bout of blood, I saw Amelia approaching the chamber on the monitors. I’d fetched Harper’s body and laid it on the ground atop the prepared space, surrounding it with black candles lit with my own hellfire.

Hellebore and nightshade wafted through the air, and the pile of organs had been ceremoniously draped around the corpse in the shape of an ancient rune of darkness. I looked to the door as I sensed Amelia’s approach, and I willed it open for her.

Standing in my true form, still keeping my true face hidden behind the skull, I watched as Amelia stepped into the room and processed what lay before her. She scanned the space, taking a few steps in and noticing the bank of monitors off to the right.

“Headquarters. Interesting decor. You usually go for Texas Chainsaw meets Peeping Tom?”

I only chuckled, pulling the door closed behind her and bolting it shot. She spun as the loud click sounded behind her, then returned her stare to mine. Willing the ceremonial knife to her hand and switching her blade to mine, I nodded to Harper.

“Carve.”

Amelia squinted at me, sucking in a breath as the full power of my voice was unleashed in the ritual chamber. I grinned, stretching my fangs wide behind the mask, and materialized behind her.

That delightful squeak of hers slipped out as I pressed into her, moving her forward into the circle with me. I directed her face to the floor, shoving her chin where I wanted her to look.

“See those?” She nodded in my grip as I squeezed tight. “Carve them in the body.”

Shoving Amelia toward her kill, I stood over her and watched as she studied the markings. As she started on the ankle, I was impressed with her ability to cleanly slice through the skin and depict the sigil so well. Much of the fluid had been drained from her to use in the paint, so there was little to leak from the cuts as Amelia continued.

She carved with remarkable skill, decorating the body from top to bottom in intricate runic etchings. Particularly intriguing was the way she almost instinctively knew to carve the largest symbol over the heart on my newest meal’s chest.

“Perfect.” I sunk down to my knees, my jaws hovering over the corpse’s throat and ready to dive in.

I whispered the incantation low, and the candles flickered around me.

Cor pravum consume;

carnem et animam deuorare;

offer eos ad foveam diaboli,

messorem furialem, sacrilegum hominis comedentem.

Barely audible above the roar of the candles’ too-tall flames, Amelia spoke to the corpse.

“Look, you’re finally good for something.”

I was poised to take my first bite, the ritual magic flaring around us, when I looked over at Amelia.

“Still happy with your choice? No others have faced the darkness and remained. What makes you think you’ll be any different, little doll?”

Amelia slowly drifted down to her knees, dipping her finger in the small pool of blood beneath the body’s thigh. She held it in front of her full lips.
