CHAPTER 11

LEGEND

I walked into the Château with MiMi. The travel from Antigua seemed to take longer than expected. I had to keep her replenished with plenty of blood and that took a lot of stopping. Since she was depleted, she drank a lot more and needed much more rest. I wound up running out of thermoses, so we had to drink from a few humans. That was something I really didn’t want to do, but we made sure we didn’t kill them and we wiped their memories clean once we were done.

“Took you long enough . . .” Rain’s words echoed through the corridor.

That was his way of greeting us. His tone made me look at him to see if he was angry with me for taking so long. I couldn’t see his emotions because he hid them very well.

MiMi took a good look at Rain and she bowed graciously before him.

Suddenly, Rain took a step forward and went so close to MiMi’s body that he was nearly towering over her.

“Rise before your King,” he said.

Her head was still slightly bowed and her eyes remained lowered. “Yes, your highness.”

“Who are you?” Rain’s cold and cruel voice erupted.

I tried to answer for her, but Rain put his hand up to quiet me.

“I said who are you?” Rain repeated himself, but this time his voice was stronger, more in control and more demanding. “Answer your King!”

MiMi lifted her eyes and replied in a calm manner. “My name is Mirage Oleander, your highness, and I’m the only living Prototype.”

Rain had paused for a moment before he said, “A Prototype murdered my mother and father . . . What do you know about it? Were you the one that killed them?” Rain’s voice was so icy that it chilled the room.

I never heard about who killed our family, so the fact that Rain was aware of that much surprised me.

“You have so much to learn, your highness. . . Alaina, Neve, Syria, Fabian, my parents, Princess Valerie, and her husband were all murdered because no one understood why there were Purebloods or why your mother was born human. Instead of dealing with the unexplainable, they got rid of them. I had nothing to do with that . . .”

“There are only two living Prototypes . . .”

She interrupted him, “There were, but as you can see, I’m the last one standing.”

“What happened to Evan?” Rain asked intensely.

“My brother . . .” She paused at the memory of him. “Evan is no longer alive.”

“Did your brother murder my family?”

MiMi looked as if she struggled to reply, but she nodded as she confirmed, “Yes . . . he did, but he was given strict orders to do so.”

“Who gave the order?”

MiMi blinked a few times. “You don’t know?”

“Don’t be coy with me. Who gave the order?”

“Members of the Préfet gave the order. They thought it would work better for vampires if they had an order in place by a government, but as long as there were Prototypes still living, they wouldn’t be able to have the power to do it.
