Chapter 4

Thoughts swirled within a current of dissonance, clouding Rayden’s mind. Staring into the moonless, overcast night, she had no desire to venture out on her own, so soon after returning with the hunting party, but nothing more could be gained awaiting the inevitable onslaught by the beasts.

The Gessa were being surrounded. The words of Eigon and Rayden’s own experience with the hunting party clarified the truth of it. Driven by a diabolical intent, blood and terror would soon begin flowing among the Gessa.

Dreaghen had to be called forth. Perhaps the only one with an answer, or strong insights, the sorcerer could not fail to share what he knew with Rayden. The alternative would be to cast aside everything that he had labored to guide her through.

Not all that long ago he brought wolves to her, to guide her through the mountains and to the Kartajen encampment, where she met the general Mago. The general had then come to the aid of the slave rebellion against the Teveren Empire. His intervention gained the former slaves victory in battle, allowing them to survive and seek refuge in Tega lands.

Rayden needed the sorcerer even more now. The threat facing her represented something even more existential, not just to her, but to all of the people who had adopted her as one of their own.

“Dreaghen, I need your counsel now,” Rayden whispered into the night air, wishing the words could fly to the ears of the sorcerer. “Appear to me.”

Rayden kept a steady pace through the shadows, her steps quiet. Working her way deeper into the forest, she watched out for any sign of movement. Over a league passed without incident.

Skirting the edge of a lake, she espied a few deer on the opposite side. A part of her wished she could divert her course, and dampen the light hunger pangs within, but she had to keep pressing onward.

She knew that she put herself into increasing danger with every step, walking alone in the night, and heading north into areas known to hold the presence of the beasts. The display of recklessness her precise intention, she intended to provoke the sorcerer, one who she knew kept appraised of her whereabouts.

Whether in the form of an apparition or a dream, Dreaghen had a penchant for manifesting when she had genuine need of him, and she knew the road traveled two ways. The sorcerer had need of her, and she doubted he would allow her to jeopardize his own intentions for her path.

Rayden continued around the lake, reaching the far end. Before she stepped back into the trees, Rayden whirled about at a swell of light close behind her. She took up a fighting stance and raised her weapons.

An apparition hovered just above the ground, carrying enough distinctive features for her to identify the entity a few strides from where she stood. The soft blue glow emanating from the incorporeal form reflected off the shimmering lake surface.

Were it not for the circumstances, Rayden would have found the sight more beautiful.
