APOLO

They really taste awful.

I try one of the burgers only to spit the chunk out of my mouth. Gregory is right: they taste like cardboard. In my defense, the meat was prepared in advance; I was just responsible for cooking them on the grill. Still, I feel so guilty about the people who came through my stand and bought one. They must have been disappointed.

I begin to tidy up my area. It’s getting late and dusk is falling rapidly. Not that it makes a big difference from earlier since the entire day has been cloudy and gray. However, the evening chill is less bearable now that darkness is slowly creeping in and blanketing this part of campus, which has no streetlights.

I sigh and turn my gaze to the entrance of the building where Xan, Rain, and Vance disappeared inside. I need a distraction, and cleaning the grill feels like the right task to keep my mind occupied.

As for Gregory, he’s currently lying on top of a picnic table, occupied with his phone, his fingers making quick swiping and tapping motions on the screen.

“You could give me a hand, you know.”

Greg turns to look at me and smiles. “Nah. It’s the least you deserve for committing a crime against food by serving those atrocities.”

“I didn’t prepare the meat. I was only responsible for grilling it.”

“Sure, sure. Whatever you say.”

“You should help me. It’s your fault Erica isn’t here.” I throw a rag at him.

“My fault?” He shakes his head and sits up. “Okay. I’ll help you, but under one condition.”

I have a feeling I’m not going to like it.

“What?”

“Tell me what happened with Rain.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Greg arches an eyebrow. “I could be of help, you know. I can give you some advice. I am very wise, Apolo.”

I let out a snort. “Sure you are, given the exemplary way you handled your relationship with Erica. I should give your performance five stars, Mr. Cupid.”

“Now, that’s a low blow. You’re in a bad mood today. It’s not my fault that your burgers—”

“Shut up, Greg. If you’re not going to help me, then do me a favor and stop talking.”

“Wow. I make the most amazing homemade meals, and this is how you repay me?”

He lies down again. Out of the corner of my eye, I notice something moving close to the entrance of one of the buildings.

Then I see Rain. She’s the first to exit and is soon followed by Xan.

Vance comes out last. To my surprise, he walks in our direction.

He wears a look of disdain on his face, and his hands are shoved inside the front pockets of his jeans. I tighten my grip on the cooking utensils that I’m cleaning.

“Oh no. I guess I’m too late for a burger.” Even the tone of his voice sounds condescending. Greg sits up the second he becomes aware of Vance’s presence. “Party monster,” Vance greets him before shaking his hand.

“Streamer boy,” Gregory replies.

Rain and Xan walk up. They both greet me but avoid making eye contact.
