Melinda moved over to the Cut table. Even though the game resulted in horrific scarring, she couldn’t help but listen to the call of it. If the table was empty, she’d play against the house, but if another player was present, they could opt to play against each other. The house would simply control the cards, ensuring that no one was cheating.

One other player sat there. He looked to be in his early 70s, balding, but his comb-over screamed of a guy who didn’t want to give up. The stack of chips in front of him proved he didn’t have to bet flesh, yet he wasn’t with the normal bettors. An ashtray and a glass of bourbon sat in front of him. A pack of Marlboro Reds and an engraved Zippo rested on the felt.

Melinda followed his gaze as it slithered over her body. He licked his lips when he looked at her tits. There was no revulsion in his gaze when he noticed her scars. Melinda wasn’t stupid. She knew how to play a man like a fiddle. And she was Charlie fucking Daniels.

The cocktail waitress returned with Melinda and Juicy’s drinks. “Thanks, hun,” Melinda said. There was a slight slur already. She tossed a $1 chip onto the tray. The waitress rolled her eyes and walked away, heading to Juicy, who was in her glory playing Sic Bo.

Melinda stuck out her tongue, licking the tip of the straw in a drunken, yet seductive manner. She didn’t think the older smoker would be much of a lay. He wasn’t ripped, but under the slightly loose skin, she could see muscle tone. His denim shirt was tucked in and only the slightest bit of a belly pushed against the blue fabric.

“Chet,” he said, extending a hand to her. A jade ring adorned his right ring finger.

Melinda switched her drink to her left hand. Her palm was damp from the glass, but Chet didn’t seem to mind. “Melinda,” she cooed.

Chet gave a little laugh and grabbed his cigarettes. He popped a cowboy killer in his mouth and lit it. He squinted and exhaled through his nose.

“That’s quite the lighter,” Melinda said, admiring his Zippo.

Chet turned it over in his hand, looking at the insignia. “Oh yeah, this bad boy has been with me for decades.” He put it to his lips and kissed it. “This was my good luck charm in ’Nam. Can’t believe this place charges us to bring our trinkets in here. Bloodsuckers just can’t get enough money, I guess. But I just wouldn’t feel like a winner without it.” He looked back at the design. “Company insignia engraved on her, but mine might be the only one left.”

Melinda drank. “And where are the rest of them?”

Darkness washed over Chet’s face, and his steel-blue eyes went gray. “Dead and buried, along with the men who carried them.”

The seductive smile Melinda had on her face melted away like cotton candy in hot water. “Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.”

Chet waved her away and picked up his glass.
