GENESIS

“You see, this is exactly what I needed,” I told Selena, a friend that I’d met through Destiny as we laid on a beach in Tulum, Mexico. I had barely dropped my bags off in the chic villa before Selena and I ran outside so I could dip my toes in the water.

“You work too hard,” she told me, adjusting herself on the day bed so that the sun could kiss as much of her body as possible. “Besides, I appreciate the distraction before things get too crazy out here.”

I nodded, not bringing up the real reason I’d come to Mexico. Destiny was supposed to be with us, but she wasn’t arriving until tomorrow.

“How do you like living in Mexico?” I asked. Selena was born and raised in California, but had moved to Mexico a year ago.

“Like every place, it has its pluses and minuses, but I’ve been enjoying myself. Just wish I was here under different circumstances.

“I know.” Movement out of the corner of my eye caught my attention. “Not to change the subject, but didn’t you say this beach was private?”

“It is,” she confirmed, sitting upright on the bed and raising her hand over her face to block the sun. “But that’s not a trespasser. That’s the owner of this villa.”

She stood, and I followed suit, my eyes glued to two men walking our way … both tall, broad shouldered, and with unmistakable features that made them easy to identify, even if I was in another country. And now it’s time to put what I learned in that acting class to good use.

“What the fuck kinda sick joke is this?” I said aloud as I gave Constantine a tight hug before going to Pharaoh next, my stomach in knots at seeing him.

Constantine placed his hand on his chin, teasing when he said, “Nah, this can’t be that same skinny girl who used to visit her aunt in Detroit claiming to be the best at shooting dice.”

I was already shaking my head since he always brought up the same shit every time I saw him. “I was better at shooting dice than you and probably still am. You and your cousins just hated to be beat by a girl.”

Even though I used to slay in a good dress back then, I’d always been a tomboy at heart, but it was awkward being myself. Constantine had treated me just as I’d longed to be treated. Like my own person without any labels.

“Constantine told me he thought you were friends with Selena,” Pharaoh stated. “Didn’t even know you and Niko kept in touch.”

I crossed my arms over my chest, sensing a hint of jealousy that shouldn’t have made me feel good, but it did. “That’s because you assume you know everything about everyone, when truth is, people are multi-layered.”

He chuckled, leaning down to whisper, “Ginx, I could spend the rest of my life exploring every delicious inch of you and still find a hidden layer you thought no one would discover.
