Jiya had woken up in a strange bed with two near-strangers on either side of her. She pushed the thought out of her mind as she made her way to the counter. The coffee shop wasn’t too crowded yet and her order barely took five minutes, most of it spent choosing Danishes.

Armed with breakfast, Jiya hurried through the rain back to her car. She winced as a soft ache awakened memories of last night’s exploits.

The Mercedes purred to life, wipers scraping against the windshield.

She drove without urgency or the aid of a map. Her phone played out voice mail messages all the way to her destination. Professional concerns wormed their way back into her mind slowly but persistently. She had a lot to do and not a lot of time to waste.

A flurry of dead leaves battered the car door as she swung it open. This was precisely the kind of weather Jiya loved. It all but whisked her indoors, where shadows clung and a single light at the end of the hall beckoned.

“You came back.” Seated at the kitchen table in last night’s clothes, Stefon looked up from his phone as if he couldn’t believe it.

“Of course I did.” Jiya plucked a cup from the carton and placed the rest in front of him, along with the keys she had unceremoniously swiped on her way out of the house. “Something smells burnt.”

“I’m attempting,” Elijah muttered, standing at the industrial range like a conductor before an orchestra, “to make breakfast.”

“Sounds risky.” Jiya held up the paper bag. “Lucky I brought an alternative.” Stefon was still staring up at her, a curiously awed expression on his face. Flattered, Jiya seated herself in his lap.

Burners clicked off in short succession and a pan clanged into the sink.

“Lifesaver,” Elijah moaned when he saw the Danishes. He took one and pecked her on the cheek in thanks. His gaze flitted to Stefon. “See? I told you she’d be back.”

Stefon rolled his eyes but his features softened when he met Jiya’s eyes. “About last night…”

“Not bad,” she hedged over the rim of her cup. “But I think we can do better.”

Before he could call her greedy, Jiya kissed him, hooking a finger in Elijah’s belt loop to keep him from going too far. Work could wait.
