Chapter 4
Jazz Improvisation
Practice Tip #3: Quick Transcribe
Most musicians realize that many of the greatest improvisers in jazz learned their early skills entirely by transcribing the solos of their musical predecessors. This process is still very useful today, and in many ways is much more important than what many young musicians spend their time practicing.
I’ve always believed that all the answers that anyone has about jazz — or likely any style of music — are in the recordings. The answers are in the music! You can unlock that knowledge and experience by transcribing solos, or by a separate process that I call the QUICK TRANSCRIBE.
