A Good Start

Antigua, Guatemala

October 2, 1968, 1620 Hours

Later that afternoon, Chat was still in Antigua. He had spent the early afternoon over a leisurely lunch in a small restaurant located on a side street just off the old central plaza, and after a short stroll around some of the local craft shops, he was now sitting in a shaded area near the plaza. He had selected an open bench that would afford him the best view of the gated entrance that led to the mission school. He was presently making a mental list of options for how he might capture Señorita Christina Miller’s attention again without setting off her defensive barriers, but none of his ideas to this point appealed to him as a workable approach.

A number of women had come and gone in his life, but Chat had never pursued a long-term relationship with any particular woman. He had been content to let things happen whenever the opportunity arose and to move on when feelings cooled. He reckoned the lack of permanence might be due in large part to his inexorable pursuit of one flying adventure or another, a passion he never seemed to tire of. That was what was so unusual about his current circumstance—a sudden attraction to a woman he had seen for a few moments in the plaza and had never had a real conversation with. What was it about this woman that made him feel the need to get to know her better?

Chat was lost in his thoughts as he sat alone in the plaza. Hell, for all I know, she could be married! A woman with those looks is bound to have a guy on the hook somewhere. Possible heavy turbulence in your flight path there, Chatman, best fasten your seatbelt, so to speak.

Approaching footsteps roused Chat from his mental conundrum. He was caught off guard when he looked up to see Christina standing just a few feet in front of him. His dumbstruck reflection stared back at him from the lenses of her Ray-Bans.

Christina was astonished when she exited the mission courtyard and spotted Chat seated a short distance across the street. As she walked toward him, the wheels began to turn in her suspicious mind. That’s odd. What is he really doing here? Should I be wary of this guy? He did say he was a pilot. Strange that he seems to have a lot of free time.

“Don’t you cockpit cowboys have to actually go fly your airplanes some of the time?” she chided, punctuating her question with a sardonic smile. “I remember where I saw you before—in the plaza this past Saturday. You were, much as you are now, bench-sitting.”

Chat was getting mixed messages. It didn’t help that her sunglasses prevented him from reading her face. He was still collecting himself after her sudden appearance and could only stammer as he started to stand. “Ah … yeah … ah. That’s a term I haven’t heard before, cockpit cowboy, huh?
