Stone

“This place is fucking insane.” I groaned, stumbling to a halt in a tiny alleyway that looked like it had been stolen from Victorian London. To my surprise, the witch they were all hounding for began to laugh.

Doubled over, with her hands on her knees, it was impossible for me to see if it was a panicked laugh or a genuine one. A flurry of commotion dashed past and I inched closer between the two brick buildings. Was that an advertisement for a haberdashery up there? In staring at the aging image of a top hat, I completely missed when I walked not just near but into Layla.

She jerked up, and I instinctively swept a hand out. It was supposed to catch hers before she tumbled into a dry well behind. But my palm cupped clear up to her elbow and I tugged.
