Chapter 14

Mariana (Bellany)

Cory and I kept our distance from Oliver as we followed him on foot. We avoided areas lit up by porch lights by crossing to the other side of the street. We hid behind cars, trees, trash cans, anything we could find that would provide us cover.

Oliver suddenly picked up his pace, darting across the front yard of a two-story house like he was dodging gunfire. He crouched down behind a bush, then his head popped up. He peeked through the window, but the house was dark, not a single light was on. I doubted he could see anything.

Cory and I hid behind an SUV parked on the other side of the street.

“What’s he doing?” I whispered. “He wouldn’t be breaking into that house, would he?”

Cory shook his head in disapproval. “It sure looks like that’s what he’s about to do.”

Headlights approached, cutting through the darkness. We crouched down and waited for the car to pass, only it didn’t. It pulled into the driveway of the house Oliver was hiding in front of.

The car door opened, and the silhouette of a girl with long hair pulled back in a ponytail appeared. She headed up the walkway as the car backed out of the driveway and drove off. The girl disappeared inside the house, totally unaware that Oliver was hiding behind the bushes in her front yard.

“That must be Scarlett,” Cory whispered. “I can’t believe he came here to spy on her.”

I could. Oliver was obsessed.

Oliver poked his head out of the bushes again and peeked through the window.

“He’s a pervert,” I said. “A stalker. A peeping tom.”

Oliver moved from the bush, to a tree, and started climbing up it.

“That must be her bedroom,” Cory said as a light appeared in the upstairs window.

Oliver sat, perched high up in the tree, watching her through the window. What a freak, I thought to myself. “I’ve seen enough,” I said. “Let’s get out of here.”

As soon as we got back into the Volvo, I cranked up the air conditioner to full blast. “How do you feel about being Oliver’s date doctor now that you know he’s a pervert?” I asked, studying Cory’s face for nonverbal cues. Was he horrified? Was he embarrassed?

Cory raked his fingers through his blond hair, letting out a humorless chuckle. “I’ll add this to my list of things to discuss with him.”

“If he's so desperate to watch her, why doesn’t he just set up some cameras?” I asked as I drove out onto the main road.

Cory chuckled. “Cameras?”

“You know what I mean,” I said, rolling my eyes. “Why does he take the risk?”

“Maybe he likes the thrill of possibly getting caught, or maybe he’s addicted to the adrenaline rush.”

I wondered if Cory liked a good adrenaline rush too. He seemed like he was speaking from experience.

He shifted in his seat to face me. “Have you seen the inside of Oliver's bedroom?”

Oliver’s bedroom wasn’t included in the house tour that Clair gave me. “No.”

Cory waved his hand through the air.
