CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Maybe I want you to remember me a little.
GRANDMAâS TOO TIRED to do much the next morning, so I munch on cereal and we spend some calm time chatting. Even though sheâs taking it easy, I can tell she wants to nap pretty early on. Weird, she wasnât out talking to Florian all that long. Maybe a week of companyâs tired her out. Next time Iâll shorten the trip to a long weekend or something.
There it is again. The idea of coming back. I always sort of assumed this would be a one-time thing. Maybe Iâll feel that way again when I get back home.
But here, this morning, it feels weird to think Iâve only got one more night of cool summer breezes and cicadas. One more morning of waking up to clear sunlight and birdsong. One more day of Grandmaâs cooking, her company, and treasure-hunting with Eden.
Eden. Of course, sheâs on my mind. How can she not be? Iâve gotten crushes on tourists before, so maybe I shouldnât be making such a big deal about things. But itâs never been like this. Maybe itâs because Iâm the one doing the leaving this time. Then again, maybe itâs just because itâs Eden. I meant it, back at the treehouse, when I told her Iâve never met anyone like her before.
Iâm going to miss her.
If Iâm going to leave, though, I want to leave our time together on a good note. I want it to be something amazing, something Eden will never forget. Something like, for example, finding two treasures in one week.
So when Grandma finally goes down for a nap and I meet Eden at the bridge, my first words to her are, âLetâs go back to the cave.â
Eden blinks at me, all startled like a cute owl. âHuh?â
âI meanââ Trying to explain my thought process feels too hard, especially when some of those thoughts are honestly too embarrassing to say out loud. âI had a good feeling about it. I want to check there again.â I grin. âIâve enjoyed the grand tour and all, but I think the cave is the way to go.â
âI donât know⦠Why donât we go back to the amphitheater instead?â
I give her my sassiest look. âIs that the one where Iâm least likely to fall to my death?â
Eden scowls. Shit, sheâs serious. âDonât joke about that! I wouldâve felt so bad if⦠if something happened.â
âWhoa, hey.â I put a hand on her shoulder. Sheâs wearing a checked dress with thin cloth straps tied at her neck, and her bare shoulders are warm from the sun. âIâm sorry I scared you.â
I want to crack a joke or something. But sheâs taking this seriously, so I guess I have to, too. She looks tired. Hell, did she lose sleep over all that? A pang of guilt curls in my gut.
âLook. Letâs go back to the cave.â She opens her mouth to argue, and I hold up my hands defensively. âI promise, Iâll be so careful you wonât have to worry about a thing.
