Effects of the Framework on My Study

College impact theory influenced the study in several ways and these will be addressed in the sections that follow.

Building the Argument

The theoretical framework starts with entry into college. In keeping with the model, I started to build the argument for the study around issues of access to higher education and moved quickly to identify the pre-college backgrounds of my targeted population. Consider this excerpt from the opening paragraph:

In recent years, access to higher education has been improved for traditionally underserved and underrepresented groups of students. This expansion of higher education in America has resulted in increasingly higher proportions of women and racial/ethnic minorities enrolling in college than has been seen in previous decades (Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005). Another group that benefits from recent shifts in access to college is students whose parents did not attend college. . (Strayhorn, 2006b, p. 82)
