PAUSES, TEMPO, MOVEMENT

To get our story to look, feel, and sound right we try to replicate the pauses and tempo of an experience. Reading a story out loud often alerts us to when we are off. The words might be correct, but the story does not sound or feel right as spoken. When this happens, we try to listen to ourselves and go back to the drawing board until it reads correctly, as Joseph Stanley tries to do in a story about a moment of anger and frustration:

It's Sunday—Sleepy eyed—Relax—Catch up on paperwork-day. A presence flashes through the door. Through sleepy eyes I respond–“It's good to see you.” Slight pause—though my eyes are limited at the moment—I feel his stare. I respond–“You don't look good.” “Hmm-hmm—I, hmm, haven't been sleeping.” I feel sharp breaths—sharp jabs—from his presence. “You look-much worse then that.” “Hmm-yeah-hmm—I'm depressed—I hmmh—Sad.” I try to take some deep breaths–“What have you been doing?” “I'm bored!” Thoughts flood me (“When are you going to take responsibility?”–screams in my head). I feel angry—minutes flood by– breathe/relax—I let silence steal the moment—to rule the moment– taking in long slow-deep breaths—exhaling even slower.

“What do you mean by depressed—hmm?”–is all he shares. You look really unkempt today—you're not taking care of your-self—I feel my own anger well up—breathe. I'm depressed—tumbles out of him—not really share so much by speech. Anger—I grasp the silence—focus on breathing—taking in deep breaths—exhaling—I slowly while breathing focus on a clearing—in the middle of the woods—the sun shines brightly while in the background I hear the waterfall.

What are we going to do about it? I don't know is shared as a sharp knife. Let's look at what we can do. I don't know flows out even sharper—it feels painful. You can? I raise my arms—while taking in deep breaths of air. Breathing I focus on flowing calm water—and the bright sun on my face. Silence-silence-silence-hmm-more silence-silence. I don't know sharply enters the air. Silence—briefly I concentrate on taking in deep breaths. Call my mother—quietly breaks the air. About? Silence-silence-silence-silence-breathe-silence. Will you call her, hmm, to talk about it?
