Chapter 12: Day 2

“Why do we have a zombie trapped here?” I ask Monica.

“Because, just in case you didn’t come back from your mission I needed to verify that Zombii Spray actually turns a person into a zombie. This was a homeless man found on the street and brought in so we could conduct our live trial. And it turns out you’re right. Zombii Spray really does turn people into zombies. He started showing symptoms within an hour of being sprayed.”

“How could you do that to someone?” I ask.

Monica scoffs and says, “It’s not like anyone will miss him, and he probably would’ve become a zombie anyway. He’s a homeless person.”

“He’s a person, regardless of his circumstances, and you just turned him into a zombie without any regard to what that’ll do to him. What if he has family members who are looking for him, and what about his life?”

“I had to know, Sam. I sent you to collect data, but if your mission failed, I needed a second way to verify your claim that Zombii Spray was the agent of infection. And now I know. I recorded what happened, as well, so the world will know. It’s a sacrifice that had to be made.”

“Yeah, a sacrifice. His sacrifice, not yours. When did you have him brought in?”

“Around the same time you were on your mission.”

“You had Ember bring him in, didn’t you?”

“Yes. She stayed on mission and brought him in. She even helped me administer the Zombii Spray. I brought her in because you had already told her about your Zombii Spray theory. She was skeptical, as was I, but if you didn’t come back we wanted a way to verify your theory. Now we have your evidence, plus what happened to this poor man, which should be enough to convince the media and the government that Zombii Co. is corrupt. We just need to be the whistle blowers.”

I feel sickened at the thought that Ember helped bring this poor man and turn him into a zombie. I could see Monica being cold enough to do something like this, but Ember?

“In any case, Sam, we need to discuss your role in all of this. I know you’re not thrilled about this development, but we need to be on the same page moving forward, especially if we’re going to bring down Zombii Co.”

“Ok, and what do you propose?” I ask.

“You brought Michelle into this. I’m not happy about that, but given her skillset she could actually help us with the next stage. However, we have to move carefully. Your stunt drew a lot of unwanted attention, so we have to lay low a little bit while getting ready for the next stage. And I can’t have other people thinking you’re getting special treatment. So, you’re going back onto phones for a bit while I get the next stage planned. I’ll be keeping Michelle and Ember off the phones, because they and others will be helping me with the next stage planning.
