Chapter 6 Day 3

Ember and I ready ourselves to go out in a blaze of gun fire as the two surviving guards saunter down. Then we hear a familiar voice say, “Come out with your hands up.”

I peek out, and see Joanna. I holster my gun and step out of the alley with my hands held up.

“What are you doing, Michelle?” Ember hisses.

I don’t respond. I don’t want to give away what I hope is actually happening, but then Ember looks out and also sees Joanna and walks out with her hands up.

“Gotta admit you got us good,” she says to the guard and smirks at him.

“Yeah we did. Wait, why are you smiling?” He asks.

“Because we got you better,” Ember says.

A moment later Joanna headshots each of the guards from behind and then says, “Come on out Greg, and bring our guest with us.”

Greg walks out with Dr. Probak, who isn’t gagged and seems to be coming along, willingly.

“Are you doing ok?” Joanna asks us.

“Better now that you’re here. Thanks for the save.”

“You’re welcome.” Joanna looks down at Archie and says, “I see he didn’t want to come along willingly. Our target decided it was in his best interest to leave this place with us.”

“We’ll need to carry Archie now because we had to knock him out. He was making too much of a fuss,” I say, and then I roll him over.

“Let’s see if we can make come to his senses, or at least some of them,” Joanna says, and then slaps him a few times across the face. After the third slap Archie’s eyes flutter open and he starts when he sees all of us.

“I was hoping this was a nightmare.”

“Compared to the nightmare you’ve helped unleash in the world, this is a sweet daydream,” Joanna says.

Archie looks over and sees Dr. Probak and exclaims, “They captured you too Saul?!”

“No, Archie. I’m coming with them willingly. What Eslinger is doing is insane.”

“Yeah, and it’s already done! What else can we do but try to ride this out?”

“Archie, I can’t accept that anymore. All of us are responsible for the zombies and there’s no way to wash our hands of it. I’m going with these people to do something about it, because just trying to ride it out doesn’t seem like a viable solution in the end.”

Archie doesn’t look convinced, but when Ember motions to him with a drawn gun he gets up.

“So, I take it your guy hasn’t been a PITA like ours has?” Ember asks Joanna.

“No. We told him why we came and he just seemed to cave and then said he’d come with us willingly. It’s been smooth sailing until we encountered your gun battle. Fortunately, the other guards were drawn away because the zombies that attacked us earlier are assaulting the compound.”

“See that Archie. You can’t ride it out if zombies get in here and infect your sorry ass. Now, get moving,” Ember says and prods Archie with her gun.

Archie shoots a glare at her but starts walking.
