The other dominant image in 1 John 2:1 – 2 is that of Jesus’ atonement (hilasmos) for sin. That “propitiation” is the correct translation of hilasmos seems as-sured in light of Leviticus 25:9, where hi-lasmos is the Greek word used in the Septuagint for the Hebrew yom (day) kippur (covering/atonement). This verse describes the fall Jewish festival of the Day of Atonement. On that day, the high priest offered a bull and a goat as a sacrifice for the sins of Israel. He then poured the blood of those sacrificed animals onto the mercy seat (the hilasmos or kippur) on the ark of the covenant (see Lev. 16:16). This background is certainly applied to Jesus by the writer of the Hebrews in chapters 9 – 10, and the same is true of 1 John 2:2. Indeed, the reference to Jesus’ shed blood in 1 John 1:7 seems to confirm that understanding.
