The House Underhill Massacre

On Monday, June 28th, 1999, Carlton Bowles, his son Franklyn Bowles, and Franklyn’s brother-in-law, Hunter Holbrook, climbed into Carlton’s 1997 Ford F-350 and left the newly constructed house at Ash Tree Lake. They made one stop at an undisclosed location where they retrieved a Browning ten-gauge pump-action shotgun, one pair of thirty-six-inch bolt cutters, three five-gallon gas cans, one claw hammer, one thirty-six inch slotted-claw ripping bar, two bottles of Jack Daniel’s whiskey, and one police-issue Taser X26 stun gun.

It was the night of the full moon, an otherwise quiet, uneventful evening. Eyewitness evidence was used to piece together the movements of the three men. First, Carlton Bowles’s truck was spotted heading south from Ash Tree Lake toward Stone River. There, the three men stopped at a gas station. Security footage shows Hunter Holbrook pumped gas while Carlton and Frank Bowles purchased three bottles of Coca-Cola and three pieces of individually wrapped beef jerky. Hunter Holbrook then purchased a pack of Marlboro Red cigarettes. Fifteen minutes later, the F-350 was again spotted as the men traveled west through town and stopped at the residence of Franklyn and Courtney Bowles. Later testimony confirmed that Franklyn Bowles briefly spoke with his sixteen-year-old son, Scott. Franklyn told the boy, among other things, that he would need to look after his mother, Courtney Bowles, if anything bad happened. Forty-five minutes later, the F-350 was spotted for the last time that night as it crossed the covered bridge over Copper Creek and entered the deep woods surrounding House Underhill.

From there, the men had to stop at two security gates, spaced nearly a mile apart, along the winding drive that led to the house. Half-inch stainless steel chains were found in the road at both gates. It can only be assumed that the padlocks were broken using the bolt cutters. Tire tracks in the mud at both scenes matched the treads on the F-350 belonging to Carlton Bowles. An empty bottle of Jack Daniel’s was also found in the woods some thirty yards after the second gate. A cigarette butt recovered in the road matched Hunter Holbrook’s preferred brand.

The F-350 was found parked beneath an oak tree some fifty yards from House Underhill’s front entrance. A single gas can was found unopened near the truck’s rear wheels. The other two were never recovered and can only be presumed lost.

While the exact events of the House Underhill Massacre are still unknown, a general timeline was established during the trial of Letitia Underhill. It should be noted here that Letitia Underhill has expressed dissatisfaction with the official record on numerous occasions, stating each time that it did not account for important contextual detail. However, according to law enforcement, her numerous attempts to provide such detail or to correct the official record were deemed insufficient, misleading, or demonstrably false. In fact, during Ms. Underhill’s appeal in 2005, prosecutors threatened to charge her with giving false testimony. Only then did she revise her story, offering instead a fact-based sequence of events.
