This piece is distinctly inspired by Simon & Garfunkel’s Scarborough Fair, which was used for the conceptual video for ICO presented to Sony.

For the occasion, sound designer Masaaki Kaneko himself contributed to the arrangements of Oshima’s melody alongside the pentagon duo. Kaneko also arranged Collapse, the music that accompanies the castle’s collapse.

This philosophy reflects those of games that influenced it, such as Prince of Persia and Another World.

This studio has housed talented composers and orchestrators such as Kohei Tanaka (Gunbuster, Gravity Rush), Shiro Hamaguchi (orchestrator for symphonic music in Final Fantasy VIII to XI, composer for the One Piece movies) and Hayato Matsuo (orchestrator for the Shenmue series, composer for Final Fantasy XII alongside Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata). The IMAGINE studio also worked on the orchestrations for the game El Shaddai.

Otani himself plays the piano, bouzouki and synthesizer on the original soundtrack.

Gustav Holst’s suite The Planets (1918) is often cited as a major source of inspiration for movie music, in particular for composers such as John Williams (Star Wars, IndianaJones, etc.).

On the CD, the piece in question is called Grotesque Figures.

On the soundtrack CD, there are several tracks not used in the game, one of which is called Final Battle. Its epic register is in line with other battle music, suggesting that originally there was another piece composed for the last phase of the battle. As well done as it is, fortunately it was not used. The battle would have lost its strengths in evocation, emotion and originality.

The London Symphony Orchestra had long been composer John Williams’ preferred orchestra, in particular for the first six Star Wars movies. 116. The cutting and editing work on the music was primarily completed by Tsubasa Ito.

Furukawa originally composed different music for this sequence, using the children’s chorus in particular: we can hear it in the piece Finale II: Escape on the album The Last Guardian Composers Choice Soundtrack, after the trumpet solo. Ueda preferred to use a section that was initially composed for the closing credits. This choice was fully approved by Furukawa, who explained to Gamasutra that this decision was “brilliant and further elevated the impact of the scene.”The conclusion of Finale II: Escape is actually present in the game, during the separation.

Furukawa explained to Gamasutra how much he enjoyed composing this piece: “After restraining the emotional voltage for much of the score, it was nice to finally be able to cut loose for this particular cue.”
