“You reckon he realises she doesn’t actually give a fig what music he listens to?” Tyler asks as Penny watches Paul leave the room, a sick, almost ominous feeling sitting heavy in her belly.

Penny shrugs, eyes lifting to Tyler’s as she forces a smile just because it seems expected.

“It’s all right. She’ll be gentle with him,” Tyler says with a grin. His comment making Penny’s stomach lurch to the point that she feels as if she’s going to throw up, because if that doesn’t make this feel real. Nothing will. “Come on. Cheer up. You’d think he’s heading off to the gallows or something.”

He laughs at his own joke, but all she does is take a deep breath and sigh. It’s hardly a joking matter in her mind and laughing is definitely out of the question when all she can think about is what Naomi is interested in regarding her husband.

“Do you want to call this off?” Tyler asks, his gaze warming her from the inside out as he stares at her.

“No. I don’t. It’s not that it’s just that… Shouldn’t I be more bothered than I… damn it… ignore me.”

“Are you saying you think you should be devastated by the idea of the two of them together and you’re not?” he asks in a voice quiet enough that she’s comforted to know his question won’t be overheard.

“Maybe?” she replies, not really committing to anything with her questioning tone. “You think I’m terrible, don’t you?” she asks, blushing as her gaze meets his. “I really ought to be beside myself, didn’t I? Him being my husband and all. When I walked in and caught him with Diane, I really thought I was going to die.”

From a heart attack because he looked so damn hot.

Not that she’s planning on mentioning that to Tyler. But really, she had been devastated too, and now she just feels kind of empty.

“Why should you be?” Tyler asks, shaking his head. His forehead creasing as though he can’t find the logic in her statement. “Because you were when he cheated? That’s fair enough. But this isn’t that. You agreed to this. Presumably you both want it?”

Penny nods at the last part of what he says. Because they do both want it, but she still thinks she ought to be a lot more bothered by the idea of Naomi helping herself to her husband than she is, and that she really isn’t devastated is what’s making her feel nauseous. Does it mean that she doesn’t really love Paul anymore? She thinks it really might, and that’s what scares her. That maybe what he did was a step too far, and it broke more than her trust?

“Then what are you scared of?” Tyler asks in a husky voice. “Talk to me, Pen. Don’t you know you can always bring your troubles to me?”

The way he says that confuses her even more. Bring her trouble to him? Why would she? Why would he want her to, and the way
